Travelling along the motorway/autoroute/freeway/autobahn, stopping to see the sights, being the last one out, how often have you looked for that haven of solace - the snack wagon, the mobile catering van, the seaside winkle stall or the café where you could get a drink or a bacon butty? – and how often has it been closed when most needed? Like most collectors I collect things close to my heart (to hell with the cholesterol), so this ongoing series reflects passionate concerns. As important to me are the signs (the semiology) given out by the words. The typology is supplemented by the typography, as well as the meaning. I am fascinated by the way the almost folk art of the names - 'Blazing Griddles' in fiery red, 'Badgers Break' precise in white on green or simply 'Bar' in neon or imprinted on a hanging curtain - are set on a contemporary machine or building, in either exotic or completely mundane places in the world. I look at the pictures and am transported – mind you 3 star Michelin gaffs are great too – just not so photogenic or affordable. |
